No time for the job hunt? Do it all in 2 hours a day

You don't need the whole day. You need 2 protected hours, six days a week. Here's exactly how to split them.

Most people think a job hunt needs the whole day. It doesn't. It needs 2 protected hours, six days a week, with your phone on silent and one browser tab open.

Spread across a full day, the job hunt turns into scrolling, worrying and refreshing your inbox. Two focused hours get more done than eight distracted ones.

Before you have a skill

  • 1 hour: learn and practise your skill.
  • 40 minutes: build your email, LinkedIn and CV.
  • 20 minutes: read 5 job posts and note the skills you're missing.
  • Weekend: one small portfolio project.

Once you have a skill, a CV and LinkedIn

  • 1 hour: improve your skill and portfolio.
  • 40 minutes: 4 targeted applications.
  • 20 minutes: follow up on older applications.
  • Weekend: one portfolio project and a weekly review.
4 targeted applications a day, 6 days a week, is about 100 a month. Each one researched, tailored and followed up.

That's a completely different game from 100 random applications. Random applications get ignored. Targeted ones get remembered, especially when you follow up on Day 3, 7 and 14.

Treat it like a job

Finding a job is a job itself. Fixed hours, a tracker, daily targets and a weekly review. If it's not in your tracker, it didn't happen. Every Sunday, look at how many applications you sent, which CV version got replies, and what the NOs have in common.

And if there's pressure at home, take a stable job first and run this plan in your 2 hours. Your first job is not your last job.
