Companies are hiring. So why can't people find jobs?

Businesses say they cannot find good people. People say they cannot find jobs. Both are true. Here is why.

I run a business and I hire people regularly. Almost every week I see the same thing: businesses say they can't find good people, and people say they can't find jobs. Both are true at the same time.

So where's the gap?

It's the gap between what companies want and what people have, and the gap between what people send and what employers need to see.

Companies want someone who can solve a problem today. Most applicants send a degree, a list of adjectives like "hardworking and dedicated", and a CV that looks like everyone else's. Nothing in it proves they can do the job.

You're desperate for a job. But the employer is even more desperate to hire someone.

Every unfilled position costs a business money, time and stress. When I'm hiring, I'm not looking for reasons to reject people. I'm hoping the next CV is the one, so I can stop searching.

How to close the gap

  • Learn what's actually in demand. Read 30 real job posts near you and count which skills repeat.
  • Build proof, not claims. "Handled 40+ customer queries a day" beats "good communication skills".
  • Make it easy to say yes. Show you can solve their problem, prove it, and stay politely in front of them until they decide.

You aren't begging for a favour. You're solving their problem.
