How to actually land a job (and the step most people skip)

The seven steps from zero to hired, in order, and the one almost everybody skips.

Most people don't fail at finding a job because they aren't good enough. They fail because nobody showed them the steps, so they do random things: one course here, 200 applications there, and then they give up.

Here's the whole path, in order.

The 7 steps

  1. Identify your box. Degree, skill, both or neither. Be honest.
  2. Learn a skill. One at a time. Read 30 job posts near you and learn the skill that repeats most.
  3. Present yourself. A professional Gmail, a clean signature, and writing in your own words.
  4. Set up LinkedIn. A headline that says role | skill | proof, not "Student".
  5. Make your CV. One page, one column, proof over claims, tailored for every job.
  6. Apply and follow up. One role, 30 companies, 4 targeted applications a day.
  7. Rejected? Get feedback. Ask one specific question, fix one thing a week, and go again.

The step almost everybody skips

Get a YES or a NO from every job, at all costs.

Call, message, email, follow up. Most people send an application and wait forever. Following up feels awkward, so they skip it, and that's exactly why it works for the people who do it.

  • Day 3: "Just checking you received my application for [Role]."
  • Day 7: follow up with something new, like a project link or one line on why this company.
  • Day 14: "If the role has been filled, no problem. Please keep me in mind for future openings."

Silence after Day 14 counts as a NO for now. Log it, ask for feedback where you can, and move on.

Do this with 100 jobs and you'll be in a completely different position.
